Huwar

Huwar is the camel calf of the collection — the one who shows up in a knitted scarf because the desert gets genuinely cold after dark, stands a little too close to the coffee, and refuses to move until the second cup is poured. Athar smells the way he smells: warm wool, cardamom, and somebody else's vanilla.

Every winter night, the camel calf stood at the edge of the light and refused to come closer.

The old man never chased him off. He would set the dallah on the coals, and when the cinnamon and cardamom lifted off the pot — sharp, dry, impossible to ignore — the calf would take one step in. Never two. That was the deal.

The men in the majlis said Huwar came for the warmth. The old man knew better. A camel does not need a fire. He came for the smell of it: the spice, then the sweetness underneath once the pot had sat a while, vanilla and something like burnt almond that only shows up in the second cup.

The winter the old man did not come out, Huwar stood at the same spot until the cold went out of the coals. Then he lay down where the dallah used to sit, and stayed until morning.

They found him there. And they found something else — the whole yard still smelled of that coffee, three days after the last cup was poured.

That is what athar means. Not the fire. What the fire leaves.
