The Tale of Nahama
The salt lake turns red twice a year, and every bird there knows to leave before it does.

Nahama did not leave. She had heard the story the same as everyone — that the water gets hot enough to change colour, that the crystal in the shallows melts and reforms, that anything still standing in it when the light goes will come out looking like it was made there rather than born.

The other flamingos told her this was a warning. She had decided, some time ago and without discussing it, that it was a set of instructions.

So she stayed. One leg down, absolutely still, while the surface went from white to amber to something with a burnt-sugar edge to it, sweet in a way that should not have been possible from salt water. The heat came up through the stone. It smelled of saffron, and jasmine, and almonds left slightly too long in the pan.

When the sun cleared the ridge she walked out the same colour as the lake.
Every bird there had a longer life than hers. Not one of them is remembered.
